Designing Wayfinding Systems for Large, Aging Multifamily Communities

Wayfinding systems for multifamily communities were rarely part of the original design in older properties. As elderly multifamily communities grew, new buildings were erected, parking layouts changed, and amenities relocated. Apartment community signage was frequently updated piecemeal by several owners, vendors, or property teams without a cohesive strategy.

The end result is a property that, while theoretically valid, is difficult to comprehend. Every day, residents provide directions. People who are arriving are outraged. Instead of selling the community, leasing teams give tours and tell visitors where they are. Delivery people move about the facility. Emergency responders squander time.
